Fairview Municipal Court
I had to go to court yesterday. It was my first time before a judge, so I was rather excited. It for a parking ticket, mind you, so the worst thing that could have happened was I had to pay it. Much better than some of the other residents in there - the guy who went before me was facing a few years in prison! I was basically there to ask the city to revoke my parking ticket, as I was a resident at the time it was issued. (I use the term "resident" loosely, as I've got a license from one state, registration/plates from another, my car insurance is in a third state, and I work/pay taxes in a fourth state. So yea, I'm not quite sure where I'm technically a "resident." For purposes of this matter, however, I'm Fairview citizen just like the next man :) )
So I get in there and stand in line to speak with a prosecutor (cause you have to get your story straight with them before you stand in front of the judge). It's at this time that I got to rub shoulders with some of Fairviews finest, like my man facing prison time. Finally, it was my turn to go into the back room to see the prosecutor. I had my paper work ready, practicing my shpeel so I was ready when I had to explain it to the judge, when the prosecutor's like, "oh, you were a resident… forget it, I'll throw the case out." I was like whoa! Just like with the big time cases, got my shit thrown out before it even went to trial :) Of course, this meant I'd never get to stand in front of the judge, which kind of sucked. Maybe next time… well, okay, maybe not!
Pay Day
I finally got paid today! That's right, after a month of working, I've finally received some payment. Typically, interns at IBM get paid each week, however, there were some mix ups that prevented me from receiving any money.
The first week, something was wrong with my internal account that didn't allow me to fill out my (electronic) time card. Once I had that resolved, they didn't like the account number I put on my direct deposit application, so that didn't go through and they issued physical checks. The only problem there was that they didn't register my summer address, so all mail was sent back out to California - including my checks. I finally got things resolved a couple weeks ago, but it was too late to re-route that weeks check, so last weeks check, which I just got today, is the one I'm holding.
Confusing I know, but it's all good. I've asked someone out west to send me my mail, so hopefully I get those ones soon. In the meantime, I've got to make this one go a long way!
His name is my name, too!
There's definitely a coolness factor that comes along with having the same name as your father. Even if your father wasn't some big name oil tycoon, or yet another line of royalty, at the very least you get throw some sort of suffix on your name. However, having the same name as someone whose so closely tied to your life does have its downsides, sort of like what happened today:
Apparently there's this company called "Privacy Guard" that'll send you checks, which if you cash implies that you want their services. A helluva dirty way to make money, but apparently it works. So Privacy Guard has been sending these checks to my dads house in Michigan, address and made out to "Jerome White." You know how that goes… I can't really blame my dad for going out and cashing them, it's hard to turn down free money. The trouble was, Privacy Guard took this to mean that it was me who wanted the services. So I get stuck with the bill and my dad takes all the money. Now that I think about it though, that's what I've been doing to him for the past 24 years :)
Too many cars!
Enterprise made me swap cars again yesterday. This is now the third car I've had from them this month. Add on my Kia, and the car I rented 4th of July weekend and this makes my fifth car in 3 weeks. This finally got to me yesterday when I left work and completely forgot which car was mine. Fortunately, the Enterprise keys have the make and model written on them, so it didn't take too long to find. Loosing your car in a parking lot is one thing, not even knowing which one is yours is a whole other feeling all together!
Leave it to me
I managed to completely hose my computer today. I was trying to make a new partition on it using Partition Magic, and did something that wasn't so good. When you create a partition using this program, there's an option that says "add new operating system." Pretty ambiguous, but it's what I was trying to do, so I chose it. During this process there's one particular step that asks if you're going to install the new OS "immediately," or "later." What the hell is that supposed to mean?!?! And to make it worse, they say if you choose incorrectly, you're machine may not be able to boot at all - I guess I chose incorrectly.
I asked some IT guys around here for help, but the problem had them all stumped (just my luck). The only solution: reinstall everything.
It can be fixed!
I was finally able to connect with someone at Geico regarding my car: surprisingly enough they said it was fixable! Apparently, for a little over 5-grand I can have this thing back on the road in no time (8 to 12 business days according to adjuster). Of course, I'll believe all this when I see it. I have this bad feeling the auto repair place is going to have a higher price tag when it's all said and done, and it's going to take them a little longer than a couple weeks to make it all happen.
EZ-Pass
I finally got my EZ-Pass in the mail yesterday - over a month after I signed up! Who'da thought, a month later neither car I registered would be operational :/ Fortunately, the EZ-Pass people said that's okay (for now anyway).
Car accident
I got into a car accident today on my way to work :( I was rounding the curb of an off ramp when my Kia started to fish tail. I lost control and ran into the wall. I didn't think I was coming around the curb too fast, but I guess when it's raining like it was you can never be too certain.
Accidents must happen around here all the time. 911 put me through to one set of authorities, who said, "where are you? … oh, you're out of our jurisdiction here's the number for the department you want." And it wasn't some convenient 800 number either. Unfortunately, he couldn't transfer and apparently had higher priority crime to fight cause he hurried me off the phone. Not cool. Eventually someone showed up. I guess if you're not like dead, no really cares. Trouble is, if you're dead you can't really call for help.
On top of that, I got a parking ticket this morning. The messed up part about it was it was my girlfriend that was illegally parked, not me! I get the feeling the parking officer saw my Michigan plates and figured the out of towner was taking up the spots for the locals. Either was it was pretty dirty. I'd like to go see the judge to talk about it, but right now my transportation is more than sketchy.
