The Heat
It was hot today, real hot. It's been hot all weekend, but today was an exception. It was truly incredible.
Last week, when I heard the weekend would be like this, I pitched the idea that we go to Death Valley. That might sounds crazy, but when I think of Death Valley, I think of heat; and if I'm going to make the trip all the way out there I want my odds of getting a memorably hot day to be really good. Unfortunately (and probably fortunately), I wasn't able to make the drive. Mother Nature, however, being as nice as she is, managed to bring Death Valley to me: Pasadena at 15:00, Death Valley at 15:00 - six degrees, but who's counting?!?!
It was so hot, even my thermostat was confused. My thermostat uses two digits to tell the temperature inside the house, so yesterday, when it read "99," I thought I'd seen it all. Then came today. I turned the A/C on in an effort to get things back under control. Three hours later, it was still working; the temperature had only gotten down to 86. The strange part was 86 was cool enough to leave it at.
Update: I saw this article in the LA Times on Tuesday (archived if that's dead). They mentioned a woman from Pasadena who had a similar in-house experience:"Before Dorothy McGlothan, 85, died in her Pasadena apartment, she had told concerned relatives that she needed only a fan to stay cool. Authorities said when they found her, the temperature in her apartment was 115 degrees." Labels: heat, weather
