Philly Cheesesteaks

Whenever I'm in Philly, I have to pay homage to Jim's. During my first visit to Philly back in 2002, a friend of mine (born and raised in Philly) told me I should goto Jim's to get my cheesesteak sandwich. I've been a patron of Jim's ever since, going each and every time I've been in the city. This weekend was no different, while my sister was off rehearsing and my girlfriend at her meeting, I made the walk down South Street to the cheesesteak Mecca.

I stood in line for 40 minutes, by far the longest I've ever waited. Usually I hit 'em up during an off hour, but this time I had no choice. Needless to say I stood on it without thinking twice. The wait was actually pretty cool as I was next to a couple members of the group Arrested Development. They were really cool kats and I wish the group all the best.

There are a couple other places in Philly that are famous for their cheesesteak sandwiches. This weekend I had the chance to check them out as well. On Sunday we (myself, my sister, and my girlfriend) went to Pat's and Geno's, arguably the two most famous spots for cheesesteak in Philly. We did a taste test, eating from Pat's first, and then Geno's right after and really put to rest where the best cheesesteak in Philly comes from: Jim's. That's right, I've been going to the best place in Philly all along :)

It was interesting to see the differences between the two establishments, and subsequently compare them to Jim's. Being that their right across the street from one another, it makes sense that Pat's and Geno's taste very much alike. They're both loaded with (too much) wiz and neither grill their onions nor chop their meat up very finely. And, to me anyway, their bread is inferior to Jim's. So yea, when in Philly, Jim's is the place.
